BLURRED PERCEPTIONS & EPHEMERAL FACES
04.04.-03.05.2025
Tamim Sibai
Blurred Perceptions & Ephemeral Faces is the first exhibition by Syrian artist Tamim Sibai in Spain, bringing his works to El Puente Gallery in what is also the gallery’s first solo show. The exhibition will open on Friday, April 4 at 7:00 PM and will be on view until Saturday, May 3.
Featuring a selection of works that define the artist's output over the past four years, the exhibition offers different approaches to what, at first glance, might be described as abstract portraits. Sibai has explored this theme since the beginning of his career as an independent artist after completing his studies, choosing portraiture as the ideal medium to delve into his interest in human nature—including his own. Thus, the portrayed subjects, whether real or imaginary, become a starting point from which the artist investigates his own questions and reflections on life.
In his paintings, the figures become ambiguous beings that challenge our understanding of identity and gender, focusing instead on revealing what lies beneath the surface. Taking expressiveness to the extreme, Sibai adds layer upon layer of meaning, where every brushstroke and element is symbolic, creating a tension of contradictions that only deepens the impact of his work.
The result of this exploration is marked by vibrant colors, thick layers of paint, and blurred atmospheres full of mystery. The subjects appear frozen on the canvas, attempting to capture that fleeting moment of calm before the storm. Behind their always-shut eyes and mouths lies an inner world—caught between dream and reality—that protects itself from what awaits once the morning fog lifts, inviting us to wonder what it hides.
Through his work, Tamim Sibai harnesses the power that defines an artist, creating a unique medium through which to reflect on his most profound thoughts and emotions. And most importantly, once complete, he shares that medium with the viewer—inviting us to partake in his introspection and offering us a mirror in which to gaze into our own soul.
